Where the Diesel Actually Goes

But the probe never actually sees fuel - it assumes the liquid around it is clean diesel. Water and adulterants settle at the bottom of the tank, exactly where the probe reads, and water registers about forty times stronger than diesel. Why Raw Readings are so hard to read


Even with clean fuel, the raw signal is a challenge, for three simple reasons:


The fuel sloshes. A tank on a moving truck is a wave pool. Every brake, climb, and pothole sends the level swinging 10-15%, and the sensor faithfully reports the chaos.


Heat and cold play tricks. Diesel shrinks as it cools: a 400-litre tank can "lose" about 5 litres overnight with nobody touching it, and mask a genuine small gap the next afternoon.


The world interferes. Park on a slope and the reading shifts by several litres. Drive through a network dead zone and the data reconnects with a sudden "drop" that looks exactly like a loss.
